A: There are three things needed for spark plug replacement, a socket wrench, extension and ratchet. The socket has a rubber grommet lining that protects the porcelain insulator of the spark plug and holds it in place during insertion. In order to check and adjust the spark plug gap, a wire-type feeler gauge is necessary, while a torque wrench is used to tighten the new plugs to the specified torque. When replacing them, ensure they are bought afresh, adjusted properly for gaps and done one by one. Prior to installing these plugs, examine them for manufacturing defects such as cracks in the porcelain insulator. Take a wire gauge of suitable thickness; make sure it fits between electrodes and drags slightly. If there is improper gap, the spark plug should be replaced. Apparently iridium spark plugs cannot have their gaps adjusted because it can damage iridium plating on their electrodes. It is important to remove any engine cover(s) and detach any hoses or other components that block access pathways. For purposes of disconnecting electrical connections from the ignition coil assembly , remove retaining bolts that hold individual coils together . In case present, use air pressure or bicycle pump to blow out dirt or foreign bodies from the spark plug area. Then use an appropriate size socket attached with an extension rod to unscrew each individual spark plug at a time until they are all off.
