What are the components and precautions associated with the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and air bag on Toyota Corolla?

Standard safety features in all the models include supplemental restraints system, popularly referred to as an air bag that helps in preventing the driver and front passengers from sustaining fatal injuries during a head on collision. The elements of the system are impact sensors installed behind the front bumper, an airbag module in the steering wheel and the instrument panel, and a sensing/diagnostic module located in the vehicle center. Some models come with the side impact airbags and side curtain airbags to enhance the safety of the car. The airbag inflator module which is in the steering wheel inflates the airbag almost simultaneously as soon as it gets an electrical impulse this is delivered through a spiral cable assembly that is functional irrespective of the orientation of the steering wheel. The passenger airbag is considerably bigger than the driver's side unit and is installed above the glove compartment and comes with an inverted trim cover that is integrated into the dimensions of the instrument panel. Accepts-side impact air bags are located in the seat backs, side curtain air bags are deployed from the headliner in case of side impact to safeguard the heads of the passengers. The sensing and diagnostic module supplies power to the airbag system at a time of a crash and monitors the system's condition every time the vehicle is started, making the 'AIRBAG' light turn on if everything is okay. Special care should be taken especially when operating in or around SRS components These are of course, disabling of the system by moving a key to the LOCK position for at least 30 seconds, the physical removal of the battery terminal, and waiting for at least 2 minutes. When holding an airbag module, it should be orientated in a way that the open end of the airbag is at the opposite side of the body and any measurement of resistance of the parts of SRS or usage of electrical welding equipment should not take place without disconnecting airbag connectors. Deployed air bag modules needs to be recycled with the help of a dealer or an authorized repair center. To replace and install the driver's side air bag module and the spiral cable, the steering wheel has to be unbolted, to access to the passenger side airbag the system has to be disabled, the yellow connectors disconnected and the airbag module has to be unattached from the instrument panel, and vice versa with installation, tightening the fasteners to the prescribed torque.
