Toyota Highlander Throttle Position Sensor

The operation of the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) in Toyota Highlander cars is aimed at always maintaining the right air-fuel ration for effective combustion. Measuring the position of the throttle at any one time and transmitting this information to the fuel injection system the Throttle Position Sensor is able to provide accurate signals to the engine computer in relation to power demands for an instant fuel adjustment. All this feedback loop takes a few times per a second, allowing an air car to accelerate, cruise, and decelerate as needed. Used in the Highlander, Toyota has in the course of the years used various types of Throttle Position Sensor: the older generation potentiometric one, and the modern non contact Hall, inductive, or magnetoresistive. In contrast with the prior generations that require direct touch, these exhibited a superior reliability and performance through the disposals that are sensitive to variations in magnetic fields. Additional other related accelerator pedal sensors enhance the electronic throttle control system and an overall improvement in the Toyota Highlander's engines.

Toyota Highlander Throttle Position Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disconnect, remove, and reinstall the Throttle Position (TP) sensor on Toyota Highlander?
A: On 1999 through 2003 models, the TP sensor is located on the throttle body, while on 2004 and later models, the TP sensor is an integral part of the electronic throttle body and is not removable. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. If necessary, remove the engine cover. Disconnect the TP sensor electrical connector by depressing the release tab and pulling off the connector. Then, remove the two sensor mounting screws and the sensor, this process is the same for both four-cylinder and V6 engines. When removing the TP sensor from the throttle body, especially on V6 models, be aware of limited space between the TP sensor and the firewall. If it's difficult to loosen the sensor screws, consider removing the throttle body and trying again. For installation, position the TP sensor 30 to 60-degrees counterclockwise from its installed position, then rotate it clockwise until the mounting holes in the TP sensor align with those in the throttle body. Complete the installation by following the removal procedure in reverse.
