Toyota MR2 Distributor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a distributor on Toyota MR2?
A: To do the test, start with the detaching of the cable in the negative terminal of the battery. Then pull off the distributor cap and clean it and the rotor for traces of cracks, carbon deposits or burnt terminals, conductively examine the center spark plug contact and change the cap or rotor if they are damaged. The distance between the signal rotor and the pickup coil projection should measure 'x' when using a feeler gauge and if it does not, the distributor should be replaced. Measure the G and Ne signal generators with an ohmmeter, to check the resistance; both the G and Ne signal generators should read between 140 to 180 ohms; if the resistance is incorrect, the distributor should be replaced. For removal, disconnect the signal generator electrical connectors, slide off the distributor terminal protector, pry loose the two cap hold down bolts, and then lift the cap off. Before removing the housing hold down bolts loosen the rotor's connection to the distributor housing and the housing to the cylinder head and then remove the distributor from the cylinder head without turning the crankshaft or cams, cause requiring timing the rotor to the crankshaft, consequently. Bearing on distributor shaft O-ring, take out existing O-ring and put a new one. If you didn't turn the crankshaft or camshaft proceed to the next step, if you did rotate it to TDC position the No. 1 piston on its compression stroke and align the pulley of the crankshaft with the O mark on the timing belt. Ensure that the detent in the intake camshaft comes to rest on top the baffle edge in the oil filler cap neck to ensure the No. 1 piston in on the compression stroke, if it is not in the correct position rotate the crankshaft through 720 degrees to position it as required. Position the drilled mark on the driven gear with the corresponding housing cavity while the dimples on the driven gear and distributor housing will have to align before you can slot the distributor with the rotor preferably pointing to the No. 1 spark plug terminal. Screw in the distributor while arranging the critics of the flange with the appropriate bolt-hole on the cylinder head and tighten the bolts with hands just enough to lock the flange firmly to the cylinder head. if the crank or cams were not shifted, align those markings on the distributor housing and the cylinder head, tightening the holds-down bolts. Last but not the least; reconnect the distributor electrical connector, replace the distributor cap, join the spark plug wire and the coil wire, set the right ignition timing, and finally tighten the hold down bolts.
