Toyota Prius Steering Wheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the airbag module and steering wheel on Toyota Prius?
A: To remove the airbag module, first disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the auxiliary 12-volt battery, ensuring to perform the initialization procedure upon reconnection. For models from 2004 and later, remove the two steering wheel covers using a screwdriver to pry them off. Turn the steering wheel so the front wheels are straight ahead. For models from 2009 and earlier, loosen the Torx screws securing the airbag module to the steering wheel, taking care to loosen each screw until the groove catches on the screw case. For models from 2010 and later, flex the torsion spring with a small screwdriver until the two pins disengage. Carefully pull the airbag module off the steering wheel and disconnect the electrical connectors by prying up the locks with a small screwdriver, then set the module aside in a safe area. Mark the relationship of the steering shaft to the hub for easier installation, then remove the steering wheel retaining nut, ensuring to mark the relationship of the steering wheel to the shaft with paint. Use a proper puller to disconnect the steering wheel from the shaft. If the airbag clockspring needs removal, follow the wiring harness to unplug the electrical connector, then disengage the three claws to detach it from the combination switch. For installation, ensure the front wheels are straight ahead, depress the lock tab of the spiral cable, and turn it counterclockwise until it stops, then rotate it clockwise about 2-1/2 turns to align the pointers visible in the clear window. Align the mark on the steering wheel hub with the mark on the shaft, slip the wheel onto the shaft, install and tighten the nut, then plug in the cruise control connector and the electrical connectors for the airbag module, pressing down the locking tab. Ensure the airbag module electrical connector is correctly positioned without interference, install the module, and tighten the retaining screws before reconnecting the negative battery cable and performing the initialization procedure.
