    Q:
What are fuses and Relay and how do they function on Toyota Echo? Posted by Customer
    A:
A fuse disconnects a circuit when a certain amount of current flows through it and can be used for safeguard of components and wires and all other forms of wiring from high amounts of current, usually as a result of a fault ,more commonly a short circuit. The primary fuses are arranged in the fuse compartment that is accessed by a panel in the stowage tray in front of the driver's seat; additionally, there are secondary fuses in the second fuse compartment positioned in the engine compartment adjacent to the battery. To gain access to the fuses pull the fusebox lid from the rear of the storage tray forward or remove off the lid of the fuse box on the engine compartment. In case of a blown fuse you will see that the wire of the fuse is either melted or broken. When undertaking the removal of the fuses, it is necessary to turn off the corresponding circuit; preferably, the battery should also be disconnected. An additional action that could be taken if using the thin-nosed pliers is to remove the fuse from wherever it was finding its way. Use a correct fuse rating where a fuse has blown, and never replace it with the wrong or higher one or make temporary connections, as this can result to more severe damage or occasion a fire. The fuses are colour-coded, and have specific ratings noted on the casing while large 'midi' fuses located in the engine compartment fuse box are ideal indications of serious wiring problems if blown. Relays are used for a number of reasons such as change over heavy currents at a remote location, when a device is required to receive many control signals, relay with timers. The relays are in the under-facia fusebox and the engine compartment fusebox, although some models have a relay box additionally. When a circuit which is controlled by a relay gets a fault, switching should provide an audible tone of 'click' if the relay is operational; if the relay do not produce the tone then the relay may not be receiving power or simply a faulty relay. Functional testing can be done by substituting with a know to be good unit, however, care must be taken since some relays look alike but are differ in functionality. To take out a relay, the circuit has to be off, after that, one pulls it out from the slot and plugs it in as a normal practice would prescribe.

    Q:
What are fuses and how do they protect electrical circuits on Toyota Highlander? Posted by Customer
    A:
The electrical circuits of the vehicle are protected by fuses and circuit breakers and fusible links, The fuse blocks are located at two places, one under the instrument panel and second in the engine compartment where the engine compartment fuse and relay box is located on the left side. On the under side of the cover there is a label which reads 'fusible link area' where there are cartridge-style fusible links and another fuse box is located inside the car at the left extremity of the dash behind a modest door marked 'fuse'. The fuse is designed for guarding a particular circuit, labeled on the cover of the fuse panel; miniaturized fuses with blades terminals allow quick swapping. When an electrical component ceases to function, it is imperative that the fuse be checked most times, using a test light to determine whether there is power at the exposed end of the fuse terminal; if the light turns on on one side but not the other, the fuse is blown; this is also further proved by visible examination as the element which joins the two terminals burns out. Blown fuses must be replaced by exact fuses, fuses that may look like the correct one, must not be used because each may provide the proper protection as stated by the amperage value molded in the fuse body. If the replacement fuse causes the circuit again to 'trip' upon switch on, then the faulty fuse should not be replaced back until the problem causing the initial tripping is usually a short circuit resulting from a poor connection or a faulty wire. Moreover, some circuits contain fusible links and are used in the circuits not generally fused, for example, high current side of charging or starting circuits. Inline fusible links are easy to distinguish by a thicker part in the cable; they are used, for instance, in the starter cable There are new cartridge types of fusible links that look like large fusinate cartridges and are located in the fuse and relay box within the engine compartment. To replace a fusible link, you want to pull the clamp off of the negative terminal of the battery, take the bad fusible link out and put in a new one of the same amps.

    Q:
How can you check if a fuse is blown for the 2006 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is recommended to check the fuse first if an electrical component fails. This can be done using a test light to check for power at the exposed terminal tips. If power is present on one side of the fuse but not the other, the fuse is blown.
