    Q:
How to remove and install the steering knuckle and related components on Toyota Rav4? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before removing the wheel cover, use a wrench to loosen the driveaxle/hub nut, but do not fully remove it, then use a wrench to loosen the wheel lug nuts, jack the vehicle up and support it on jackstands before finally removing the wheel. Then, unbolt the brake caliper while preserving the hose connection and then unbolt the brake disc; further, separte the brake hose from the strut while hanguing the caliper with the help of wire on the coil spring. Loosen off the ABS wheel speed sensor and record the physical position of the strut to the steering knuckle to ensure they are reinstalled in the same position. Lose off the strut to the steering knuckle nuts and bolts without taking them off, and separate the tie rod end with the steering knuckle arm and take off the ball joint to control arm bolt and its nuts. Turn the driveaxle/hub nut and push the driveaxle from the hub and support the free end by placing a wire. When separating the balljoint from the steering knuckle an option that can be used is the balljoint removal tool or small puller in case of hub bearing replacement, it is advisable to only detach the rubber boot and leave the balljoint attached. Loosen and take off the strut-to-knuckle bolts and gently pry the steering knuckle from the strut. For installation, position the knuckle and hub assembly, slide the driveaxle in to the hub, and subsequently position the knuckle into the strut flange and fasten the bolts/nuts but do not over tight. If the ball joint was disconnected from the old knuckle, reconnect this to the new knuckle and tighten the ball joint stud nut, fit new cotter pin. First of all, engage the balljoint to the control arm, but do not tighten the bolt and nuts at this stage, secondly fix the tie-rod to the steering knuckle arm and tighten the strut bolt nuts, the balljoint-to-control arm bolt and nuts and the tie-rod nut. Insert the brake disc onto the hub and then fit the caliper to it; fit the driveaxle/hub nut and slightly and but no tightly. The wheel and lug nuts should be fitted and the vehicle lowered and the lug nut tightened before the turning the spindle on the driveaxle/hub nut and fitting the wheel cover. Last but not the least, have the front-end alignment inspection done and have it corrected if need be.
