    Q:
What is the purpose and function of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) and Air Bag on Toyota Celica? Posted by Customer
    A:
All subsequent models are provided with the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), or the airbag as it is known to most laymen, which is aimed to save the life of the driver in a head-on or frontal accident. It has air bag module in the mid of the steering wheel, two crash sensors at the frontal part of the car and the diagnostic module with the extra crash sensor located inside the disembarked part of the car. The cushion and inflater unit or the airbag module is commonly used, wherein the inflater assembly is situated at the back part of the module so that once an electrical signal reaches it, it can inflate almost immediately. This signal is transmitted by the spiral cable that is a flat, ribbon-like, electrically conductive tape although turning the steering wheel. The system features three sensors: two crash sensors are installed at the rear of the car lining with the bottom of the bumper and besides the wheel arches; a safing sensor is installed in the center airbag sensor assembly which is situated beneath the instrument panel. Front crash sensors are really quick pressure occasioned switches which, when enough weight is applied, close an electrical circuit thus sending a signal to the safing switch which then triggers the expansion of the air bag. The CASA house the safing sensor and a system microprocessor, which tests the CASA every time the car is starts, two primary components out of four. The "AIRBAG" light comes on for approximately eight seconds if the system is working correctly; if it stays on, it is an indication the car should be taken for a check at the mechanic. While performing work on or in the vicinity of the SRS system, it is required that any wiring accessed near the system must be the bright yellow conduit and; no connectors must be disconnected from their applications unless the SRS system is disabled because each of the connectors employs a two-stage locking mechanism. On the following manner the SRS warning light shall be turned off by placing the steering wheel in the straight ahead position, turning the ignition switch to LOCK position and by removing the negative terminal of the battery. A backup capacitor takes two minutes to discharge ; then the two yellow connectors at the base of the steering column and under the instrument panel should be removed. Speaking of the driver's side airbag, the lower finish panel will have to be replaced in order to gain access to the connector; as for the passenger's side airbag, the glove box access cover should be removed in order to pull the connector. After service, connectors need to be connected, the lower corner finish panel and glove box access lid need to be installed, and the car's negative terminal of the battery tethered. Last of all, by rotating the ignition key to the On position, one should confirm that the "AIRBAG" warning light blinks for approximately six seconds then off.
