Several special Toyota service tools are called for in this procedure; however, certain standard tools, such as a two-jaw puller and a slide hammer, can be used in their place. To remove the rear hub, begin by loosening the wheel lug nuts without removing them, then take out the cotter pin and bearing lock nut cap, and with the parking brake set, remove the bearing lock nut. Raise the rear of the vehicle and secure it on jackstands, followed by removing the tire and wheel assembly. Next, take off the caliper mounting bolts and the caliper, hanging it out of the way with a piece of wire, then remove the brake disc. Check bearing play in the axial direction using a dial indicator and compare it to the specifications. Disconnect the suspension arm, remove the cotter pin and nut, and use a two-jaw puller to disconnect the tie-rod end from the rear axle carrier. Disconnect the rear axle carrier from the lower arm, paint marks on the strut's lower bracket and camber adjust cam, and remove the two axle carrier nuts and bolts with the camber adjust cam before taking out the rear axle carrier and hub, ensuring to cover the driveaxle boot with cloth to protect it from damage. For wheel bearing replacement, remove the three bolts holding the disc brake dust cover to the axle carrier, then place blocks of wood between vise jaws to prevent damage and secure the rear axle carrier with the hub between the blocks. Use a slide hammer to remove the oil seal from the axle carrier, followed by removing the bearing snap ring. Utilize a two-jaw puller to remove the hub from the rear axle carrier and the bearing inner race from the bearing, then again to remove the inner race from the rear axle hub. Use a slide hammer to remove the oil seal from the rear axle carrier, and to remove the wheel bearing, place the bearing inner race on the bearing and drive it out with a suitable sized socket, noting that when replacing the wheel bearing, it should always be replaced as an assembly. To install the new bearing, press it into the rear axle carrier with a suitable size socket, drive a new oil seal into the carrier, and apply multi-purpose grease to the oil seal lip. Drive a new outer oil seal into the rear axle carrier and apply multi-purpose grease to the oil seal lip. Install the disc brake dust cover and tighten the bolts securely, then apply multi-purpose grease to the oil seal and bearing, pressing the hub into the rear axle carrier with a suitable size socket. Install a snap ring into the rear axle carrier using snap ring pliers, then drive a new inner oil seal into the rear axle carrier with a socket and apply multi-purpose grease to the oil seal. The installation of the rear hub is the reverse of the removal procedure; replace the tire and wheel assembly, tighten the wheel lug nuts finger tight, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. It is advisable to drive the vehicle to a dealer or alignment shop to have the rear wheel alignment checked.
