    Q:
How to remove and install rear parking brake cables to the equalizer on 2002 through 2008 Toyota Solara? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace the rear parking brake cables to the equalizer, first loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands while blocking the front wheels, then remove the wheel. Ensure the parking brake is fully released before removing the brake drum or disc. For models with rear drum brakes, take out the brake shoes and disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever; for those with rear disc brakes, remove the parking brake shoes and disconnect the parking brake lever. Unbolt the cable housing from the backing plate by removing the two bolts, and unbolt all cable brackets, noting that one is located near the forward end of the strut rod. Remove the exhaust heat shield to access the cable clamps, loosening the clamp bolts to slide the cable housing out. Disconnect the cable end from the equalizer by aligning it with the slot and sliding it out. Installation is the reverse of removal, followed by adjusting the parking brake. For the parking brake lever to equalizer cable, remove the center console, release the parking brake cable, and detach it from the lever by removing the locknut and adjusting nut. Inside the console area, remove the two bolts securing the cable flange to the floor, twist the flange 90 degrees, and push it out through the hole. Installation is the reverse, applying a light coat of grease to the cable end that contacts the equalizer and adjusting the parking brake cable. For the parking brake pedal to intermediate lever cable in pedal-type models, remove the console, then the two nuts securing the cable to the rear of the turnbuckle, and twist the turnbuckle off the front cable end. Remove the driver's kick panel, knee bolster, and knee bolster reinforcement to access the parking brake pedal bracket sub-assembly. Loosen and remove the locknut and adjuster nut on the cable end at the pedal assembly, then use locking pliers to remove the clip securing the cable end to the front of the parking brake pedal assembly and pull the cable out. Pull back the carpeting between the pedal assembly and the console area to locate and remove the clamps securing the cable to the floor. Installation is the reverse of removal.
