When the shift lever inside the vehicle is moved from the Neutral position to other positions, it should move smoothly and accurately, with the shift indicator reflecting the correct gear position. If the indicator is misaligned, adjust the shift cable by raising the vehicle and securely supporting it on jackstands, then removing the splash shields covering the area between the front of the vehicle and the lower crossmember. Loosen the swivel nut on the manual shift lever at the transaxle, place the manual lever in Park, and return it two notches to the Neutral position. Move the shift lever inside the vehicle to Neutral, hold the lever with slight pressure toward the REVERSE position, and tighten the swivel nut securely. Check the operation of the transaxle in each shift lever position, ensuring the starter operates only in Park and Neutral. For replacement, disconnect the cable from the manual lever and remove the large C-clip cable retainer from the bracket above the manual lever. For early models, loosen the large grommet from around the cable housing at the firewall, remove the steering column upper and lower covers, take out the driver's knee bolster and the reinforcement panel behind it, remove the retaining clip, pull out the clevis pin, and disconnect the cable from the shift lever. For later models, remove the instrument cluster panel for access to the upper end of the cable, detach the secondary cable guide bracket, remove the two nuts securing the cable to the firewall, and use a screwdriver to pry the cable end off the shift lever while detaching the cable outer housing from the shift lever bracket. For all models, pull the cable through the firewall, install in reverse order of removal, and ensure to adjust the cable at the transaxle end upon completion.
