To go in and out the transmission and transfer case as an assembly firstly drain the transfer case lubricants. Raise through the front the transmission as far as the bell housing area and loosen the eight bolts that hold the transfer case to the transfer case adapter. Raise or tilt the transfer case backwards until is out of the engagement with the splines of the transmission output shaft and ensure it is leveled on stand. After passing through this stage the input shaft can be rotated and finally removed. Removal is done in the reverse sequence of installation that gives attention to how the transfer case to transmission bolts should be tightened to the correct torque. After installing the transmission / transfer case assembly, the transfer case should be filled with the recommended fluid and the vehicle driven to confirm leakage.

The tools necessary for an overhaul include internal and external snap-ring pliers, a bearing puller, a slide hammer, a set of pin punches, a dial indicator, and possibly a hydraulic press. Additionally, a large, sturdy workbench and a vise or transfer case stand will be required.
