    Q:
How to remove and install the steering column on Toyota Rav4? Posted by Customer
    A:
To pull out the column one must park with wheels in a straight line and turn off the power by pulling the negative terminal of the battery. Pop the hood, take out the steering wheel and turn the ignition key to the Lock position to avoid rotating the steering shaft. Remove the driver's knee bolster and the reinforcement attached to it, then, the steering column covers and the upper trim of the instrument panel. Turn the combination switch and clockspring assembly clockwise and unlock from the steering column, swing the column cover away from the firewall to release the clamps and remove the carpet upward. Locating the U-joint in relation to the steering shaft, locate the pinch bolt and remove it, and behind the dash, the electrical connections transferring power to the power steering column would need to be disconnected. Take out the respective fasteners that screw into the steering column, lower the column and pull it to the rear to prove positive that it is no longer connected. Remove a bolt securing the intermediate shaft to the steering column shaft; take into account that the latter is oriented differently when disconnecting it. On the installation process, informally help the steering column to get into its rightful place and reengage the at least marked positions of the intermediate shaft then rotate the mounting fasteners and tighten them. Bolt the last nut to the other side and fasten the four studs; then tighten the last nut before placing the pinch bolt into its corresponding slot and completing the disassembly in the reverse sequence. To take out the power steering ECU, have the negative terminal of the battery disconnected, follow the upper section of the instrument panel to have it trimmed, and finally, the steering column. Remove the screws fastening the wire harness to power steering ECU, unlock the connectors of the ECU dust cap and pull the claws which are attached to ECU protector. Remove the terminal bolts and the bolts fixing ECU assembly to the steering column, then pull out the ECU. Installation is the same as removal but in reverse, and then the ECU needs to be calibrated by joining terminals 4 and 12 of the Data Link Connector under the dash, turning on the ignition for at least, 5 seconds and then off. To take out the power steering motor one has to first take out the steering column and the power steering ECU and then take out the bolts fixing the motor to the column and lift it. To install the new O-ring, apply a thin layer of grease to the motor spline and then insert the motor shaft into the steering column linking the bolt holes and tighten the bolts followed by the reverse process.
