    Q:
How to remove and install Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate on Toyota 4Runner? Posted by Customer
    A:
Lifting the car on jackstands and the procedure of dismantling the transmission but leaving the engine behind comprises a number of stages. The clutch release cylinder should first come off, next the transmission should be pulled out so the engine is suppose to be held from above by engine lift or a jack together with a piece of wood to avoid the oil pan to be damaged. The clutch release lever and the release bearing can for the moment be left assembled together. An alignment tool should be instal led through the clutch disc hub to help support the clutch disc during removal. During reassembly of the carburetor it is necessary to check the flywheel and the pressure plate for marks made by the index pins, if there are no marks it is necessary to place a mark that will facilitate correct reassembly of the carburetor. Then six scalar bolts securing pressure plate to flywheel should be loosened in a criss-cross fashion and then they can be taken out by hand and then finally pressure plate and clutch disc can be removed. Differential housing, drive shaft and gears, clutch assembly, all ambient gears and shafts, and shields, pins and bushing must be inspected and checked for wear such as oil contaminated on clutch disc lining etc., seals might bulge or be leaking. The flywheel should further be examined for any cracking, etc, and lightly dressed for unevenness. Pilot bearing and clutch disc lining should be checked for wear and the latter must be of not less than 1/32-inch above the rivet heads. The clutch disc should also, be replaced depending on the amount of wear, and damage to the pressure plate should also be checked. The fly-wheel and pressure plate areas have to be degreased and free of all oil before the unit is installed. After installing the clutch disc and pressure plate, the two must be positioned against the flywheel with the help of the alignment tool. The pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts should only be tightened enough to require use of fingers and the clutch disc has to aligned before proceeding to tighten the bolts in sequence, so that the pressure plate should not distort. Finally after tightening all the bolts, the alignment tool shall be Withdrawn; and high temperature grease applied on release bearing and contact area. Last but not the least, the clutch release bearing and the transmission should be replaced with all the removed parts with check on torque of all fasteners.
