    Q:
How to remove and install the timing chain and Timing Cover on Toyota T100? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the components, first disconnect the negative cable from the battery, ensuring you have the anti-theft activation code if applicable. Block the rear wheels, apply the parking brake, and drain the engine coolant and oil. Raise the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands, and if present, remove the protective cover under the engine compartment. Take out the coolant expansion tank, spark plugs, and drivebelts. Detach the air conditioning compressor without disconnecting the refrigerant lines and set it aside, then remove the compressor mounting bracket. Unbolt the alternator, alternator bracket assembly, drivebelt idler pulley, and adjustment bracket from the engine. If equipped, unbolt the cruise control actuator and set it aside. Lower the radiator hose from the inlet, remove the two nuts from the bracket, and take out the water pump. Position the number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke, then remove the cylinder head and oil pan along with the oil strainer. Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt using a chain or strap wrench, and if necessary, use a bolt-type puller to remove the crankshaft pulley. Remove the timing chain cover bolts and nuts, carefully prying the cover off without damaging the aluminum. Take out the timing chain and camshaft sprocket, inspecting the sprocket teeth, keyways, and chain for wear or damage, and replace any defective parts. Check the timing chain tensioner for proper operation, ensuring the plunger moves smoothly and locks in place. Inspect the oil jet for restrictions. Clean the timing chain area and cover, install new O-rings, and ensure the oil jet is directed toward the timing gear. Install the timing chain over the camshaft sprocket, aligning the timing marks, and secure the chain guides. Apply RTV sealant to the timing cover sealing surface, install the cover, and tighten the timing cover bolts to the specified torque. Reinstall the remaining parts in reverse order, add engine oil and coolant, start the engine, set the ignition timing, and check for leaks and proper operation.

    Q:
How do you check the timing chain tensioner for the 1996 Toyota 4Runner? Posted by Customer
    A:
    a) Check that the plunger moves smoothly when the ratchet pawl is raised with your finger. The tensioner plunger must move freely in the bore of the housing. b) Release the ratchet pawl and make sure the plunger is locked in place by the ratchet pawl and does not move when pushed with your finger.
