The location of the clutch components is usually reached with the transmission off the vehicle but the engine still in place; however, if the engine is going to be pulled for extensive overhaul, it would not be a bad idea to inspect clutch wear and replace questionable parts. Start by pulling out the clutch release cylinder followed by the removal of the transmission, with the engine in place, this may require an engine-lift or a jack and a piece of wood to sit the engine on. By inserting a clutch alignment tool through the disc hub, the dropping of the clutch disc can be stopped while removing it. Check the flywheel and pressure plate for the index marks, and if not present, then make some on them that will be useful for correct alignment when the time comes to put them back on the engine. Turn the bolts holding pressure plate to fly wheel gradually in a cross wise manner until all spring pressure is released, then remove the bolts, the pressure plate and clutch disc. While inspecting, also look for cracks specifically on the flywheel as they can hinder the overall function of the piece; although if mistakes are present, a machine shop can help to polish over them. Check the pilot bearing and the lining on the clutch disc being careful to see that lining is 1/32-inch above the rivet heads and no sign of damage. Some of the other parts that reside along with the clutch disc include the clutch release bearing and the pressure plate, according to their condition, these should also be changed. To install the clutch, clean the flywheel and the pressure plate carefully using a rubbing-alcohol dampened rag to remove any oil or grease, and then, correctly orient the clutch disc and pressure plate by using the alignment tool. Hydrilate the pressure plate to flywheel bolt finger tight, align the clutch disc and then uniformly tighten the bolts in star like fashion to the torque limit. Lastly, apply grease on the inner race of the clutch release bearing and the fork fingers after which the bearing is to be fitted , then the transmission and clutch release cylinder which should then be tighten after following the recommended torque quantam.
