This procedure applies to both front and rear brake discs. Begin by loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and securely supporting it on jackstands. Remove the wheel and, for rear disc brakes, install the lug nuts to hold the disc in place, possibly using washers. If working on a rear brake disc, release the parking brake. Slightly depress the caliper piston, remove the caliper mounting bolts, and take off the caliper along with the brake pads without disconnecting the brake hose. Suspend the caliper out of the way with wire, and if it's a rear brake disc, remove the two torque plate bolts to detach the torque plate. Visually inspect the disc surface for score marks and damage; light scratches are normal, but deep scoring over 0.039-inch requires disc removal and refinishing. Check both sides of the disc, and if pulsating occurs during braking, suspect disc runout. To check runout, place a dial indicator about 1/2-inch from the outer edge of the disc, set it to zero, and turn the disc, ensuring the reading does not exceed the allowable limit. Regardless of the reading, resurfacing is recommended to ensure a smooth finish and eliminate brake pedal pulsation. Avoid machining the disc below the minimum allowable thickness, which can be checked with a micrometer. Once the disc and hub assembly are removed, unbolt the disc from the hub, noting that on 1990 and earlier models, wheel studs must be removed with a hydraulic press. For rear discs, remove the lug nuts used to hold the disc in place; if stuck, loosen the parking brake adjuster screw and tap with a rubber mallet. To install, position the rear disc over the wheel studs, install the torque plate, and tighten the bolts. Next, install the brake pads, shims, and springs, followed by the caliper and its mounting bolts. Finally, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. Depress the brake pedal a few times to bring the brake pads into contact with the disc, and check the brakes' operation carefully before driving.
