To begin, relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable. Next, remove the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor from the fuel tank. Disconnect the sensor connector and connect the probes of an ohmmeter to terminals 2 and 3; an accurate check of the sensor can be made by removing the assembly from the tank and checking the sensor resistance while moving the float arm. With the float arm down (tank empty), the resistance should be approximately 110 to 115 ohms, and with the float arm up (tank full), it should be approximately 2 to 3 ohms. The resistance should change smoothly from empty to full, and if the readings are incorrect, the sensor should be replaced. For replacement, remove the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor assembly from the fuel tank, carefully angle the sensor out of the opening without damaging the fuel level float at the bottom of the assembly, and disconnect the electrical connectors from the sensor. Separate the sensor from the fuel pump assembly by removing the mounting screws and pushing down on Tab A while pushing up to detach the sensor from the bracket for models from 1998 to 2000. Installation is the reverse of removal.
