Inspect the upper and lower balljoints for looseness whenever the vehicle is raised. To check the balljoints with the suspension assembled, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Clean the balljoints and inspect the seals for cuts and tears; replace any damaged balljoint seals. For all models except 4WD T100s, place a floor jack under the lower control arm and raise it slightly to unload the balljoint, ensuring the vehicle is stable. Pry up on the tire of each wheel and have an assistant feel for play in the lower balljoint; if significant play is detected, replace it. For 4WD T100 models, with the vehicle raised and supported on jackstands, pry up and down on the lower control arm to feel for play in the balljoint. For the upper balljoint on all models except 4WD T100s, with the vehicle raised and supported on jackstands and a floor jack supporting the lower control arm, pry up and down on the upper control arm while feeling for play; replace if significant play is felt. For 4WD T100 models, with the vehicle raised and supported on jackstands, pry up on the tire while an assistant feels for play in the upper balljoint; replace if significant play is detected. Balljoints should also be checked when separated from the steering knuckle or when the steering knuckle is separated from the upper or lower control arm; if the ballstud can be turned in its socket, replace the balljoint. A more accurate bench test involves flipping the balljoint stud back and forth five times, then measuring the turning torque on the fifth turn with an inch-pound torque wrench; if the indicated torque is not within the specified range, replace the balljoint. For 2WD T100 models, detach the balljoint from the steering knuckle, unbolt the upper balljoint from the upper control arm if replacing it, and install the new balljoint, tightening the nuts to the specified torque. For the lower balljoint, unbolt it from the lower control arm and install the new balljoint, tightening the nuts to the specified torque. For 4WD models, detach the balljoint from the steering knuckle, unbolt the upper balljoint from the upper control arm, and separate it from the steering knuckle using a suitable tool; installation is the reverse of removal. For the lower balljoint, detach it from the lower arm with a puller and tighten the fasteners to the specified torque. For 2WD Tacoma models, disconnect the upper end of the steering knuckle from the upper control arm, unbolt the upper balljoint, and install the new balljoint, tightening all fasteners to the specified torque. For the lower balljoint, disconnect the lower end of the steering knuckle from the lower control arm, detach the tie-rod end, unbolt the lower balljoint, and install the new balljoint, tightening all fasteners to the specified torque. For 4Runner and 4WD Tacoma models, remove the steering knuckle, dust boot, and snap-ring, then use a two-jaw puller to remove the upper balljoint; if replacing it yourself, use a hydraulic press to install the new balljoint. For the lower balljoint, disconnect the tie-rod end, unbolt the lower balljoint from the steering knuckle, install the new lower balljoint, and tighten all fasteners to the specified torque.
