    Q:
How do you remove and install the steering knuckle on 1995 through 2004 Toyota Tacoma? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands while applying the parking brake before removing the wheel. For 2WD pick-up models, support the lower control arm with a jack and raise it slightly. Detach all brake hose brackets from the steering knuckle, ensuring to remove the bracket bolt and pull the brake hose clear if applicable. On vehicles with ABS, detach the front wheel speed sensor by removing its retaining bolt. Remove the brake caliper and, for 2WD pick-up models, the torque plate. Take out the brake disc/hub assembly, sliding the disc out of the hub for 4Runners and 4WD Tacoma models. Remove the disc splash shield by taking out the necessary bolts, and for 4WD T100 models, discard the splash shield retaining ring and replace it with a new seal/retainer. Measure the thrust clearance on 4WD T100 models by pulling out on the driveaxle end and comparing the measurement to the allowable maximum; if it exceeds this limit, have the bushings replaced by an automotive machine shop. Disconnect the tie-rod end from the knuckle, and for 4WD T100 models, disconnect the lower end of the shock absorber from the lower control arm, then remove the snap-ring and spacer from the end of the driveaxle. Also, disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the lower control arm for 4WD T100 models. Disconnect the steering knuckle from the upper and lower control arms, then remove the steering knuckle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring all suspension fasteners are tightened to the specified torque. Adjust the front wheel bearings for all models except 4Runners and 4WD Tacomas.

Remove the brake disc/hub assembly as described in Chapter 1, Front wheel bearing check, repack and adjustment. On 4Runners and 4WD Tacoma models, slide the disc out of the hub.
