The catalytic converter is an emission control device that reduces pollutants in the exhaust gas stream. It consists of two types of catalysts, the oxidation catalyst and the reduction catalyst, which work together to reduce hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen emissions. If you suspect a malfunctioning converter, have it diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or authorized emissions inspection facility. Regular inspections should be done for leaks, corrosion, dents, and other damage. If any damage is found, replace the converter. To check for a restricted converter, use a vacuum gauge to diagnose the effect of a blocked exhaust on intake vacuum. If the exhaust system is restricted, replace the catalytic converter.

The front exhaust pipes need to be unbolted and disconnected from the exhaust manifolds.
