    Q:
How to remove and install the exhaust manifold on Toyota Prius? Posted by Customer
    A:
First to get to the process of removing the exhaust manifold on 2009 and earlier models you should unfasten the cable from the negative terminal of the 12-volt battery before reconnection of the cable you should do the initialization process. Lift the front of the vehicle with the jack and place it on proper jackstands that will hold the car in position. Pour a small amount of penetrating oil to the bolts and springs that fix the exhaust pipe to the manifold, then take out the bolts and disengage the front of the exhaust pipe from the manifold, being extra careful not to damage the oxygen sensor. This would require one to perhaps, unfasten the inner heat shield above the right drive axle if one has to get to one of the bolts. Next, push on the lower tab and release the lower exhaust manifold brace, after that turn and take off the heat shield located on the manifold. Last of all, remove the manifold as well as the gasket. For the model that was manufactured 2010 and later, first, the two upper covers of the engine should be detached, second, the vehicle should be lifted and the lower engine cover should be unbolted. Take out the crossmember from under the exhaust pipe, and u drain the engine coolant. If the model does not have the exhaust heat recirculation system, then uninstall the front exhaust pipe and the gaskets; If it has just that feature, then disconnect the oxygen sensor, the coolant hoses and then the front exhaust pipe and the gaskets. Take off the floor heat insulator, the heat sheild located on top of the exhaust manifold and the oxygen sensor. Next, unbolt and take off exhaust manifold brace and the exhaust manifold in your car. For installation, it is recommended that the manifold and cylinder head mating surfaces be scraped to remove deposits of the old gasket material, and carbon if the gasket was leaking, warpage should be determined. Place a new gasket on the cylinder head studs, fit the manifold, and screw the mounting nuts accordingly, by starting with the center nut and working outwards. Replace the remaining parts in reverse manner and start the engine to confirm exhaust noise.
