    Q:
How to remove and install an exhaust manifold on Four cylinder engine on 2002 through 2006 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the negative battery cable and raise the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the lower splash shields and apply penetrating oil to the exhaust pipe bolts. Remove these bolts and separate the exhaust pipe from the manifold, taking care not to damage the oxygen sensor. Remove the lower exhaust manifold braces and oxygen sensor connectors. In the engine compartment, remove the upper heat shield and detach the manifold and gasket. Scrape off old gasket material from the manifold and cylinder head. If the gasket leaks, replace the warped manifold. Position a new gasket over the cylinder head studs, noting any directional marks. Install the manifold and tighten the nuts/bolts from the center out. Reinstall the remaining parts in reverse order and check for exhaust leaks after running the engine.
