Remove and discard the old exhaust manifold gasket.

Unbolt the lower exhaust manifold braces and remove them from the engine, and also disconnect the oxygen sensor connectors.

Unbolt the exhaust manifold(s) from the cylinder head(s), working from the ends toward the middle, and slip the manifold(s) off the mounting studs.

Tighten the exhaust manifold nuts a little at a time, working from the center nuts outward.

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

The catalytic converter is an emission control device added to the exhaust system to reduce pollutants from the exhaust gas stream. There are two types of converters: the conventional oxidation catalyst, which reduces hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO), and the three-way catalyst, which lowers the levels of oxides of nitrogen (Nox), hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO). For models from 2001 to 2006, there are three catalytic converters: a warm-up three-way catalytic converter (WU-TWC) in the front exhaust manifold, another in the pipe from the rear manifold, and the final three-way converter in the main exhaust pipe.
