For vehicles that made from 2003 and before, the radio signal is normally received through a wire grid-type antenna bonded on the rear window glass. The following procedure applies to conventional external type antennas and does not pertain to glass-printed antennas found on some 4Runner models, which should be serviced by a qualified repair shop. Begin by removing the radio and unplugging the antenna cable, then trace the cable's routing and detach all clamps or clips. Attach about four or five feet of string or wire to the antenna lead to assist with the installation of the new lead. For fixed antennas, use a small open-end wrench to unscrew the antenna mast, then remove the antenna base retaining nut with snap ring pliers or a similar tool, detach the antenna base, and pull out the antenna lead until the string or wire is exposed. Attach the string or wire to the new antenna lead and pull it back through, completing the installation in reverse order of removal. For power antennas, ensure at least two people are involved. Connect the battery if it was disconnected and turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position. Remove the antenna base retaining nut, then have one person control the ignition switch while the other holds the antenna mast. Press the AM/FM buttons on the radio and turn the ignition switch to the ACC position to fully extend the antenna mast, which can then be removed. Detach the inner fender well from the fender and unbolt the power antenna motor, pulling out the antenna lead until the string or wire is exposed. For 4Runner models with wheel opening extensions, remove the three fender liner clips and pull out the fender liner, unplug the electrical connector from the antenna motor, remove the retaining bolt, and take out the antenna motor. Attach the string or wire to the new antenna lead and pull it back into the passenger compartment, then install the power antenna motor. Install the antenna mast with the teeth on the cable facing forward, and to wind the cable and retract the mast, turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position. If the cable isn't wound, twist it as necessary and repeat the procedure. Finally, install the antenna base retaining nut, even if the mast hasn't fully retracted, and press the radio wave band select buttons to retract the antenna, completing the installation in reverse order of removal.
