Warm the engine and drain the engine oil, then remove the timing belt and the crankshaft timing pulley. Next, take out the timing belt tensioner/idler pulley bolt and the pulley, followed by the dipstick tube retaining strap bolt from the water pump, and remove the tube from the oil pump housing. Proceed to remove the oil pan and strainer, then take out all seven oil pump bolts, noting that the two upper right bolts are longer than the other five. Gently pry between the No. 1 main bearing cap and the oil pump cover to break the gasket sealer free, being careful not to damage the mating surfaces. Remove the oil pump housing; if replacing the pump, continue with the next steps, or if replacing the oil seal in the old pump, clean the gasket mating surfaces of the oil pump and the front of the block. Apply ATV sealant to the gasket mating surfaces and install the new gasket on the block, ensuring the seal lip is generously coated with multipurpose grease. Carefully slide the oil pump housing onto the front of the block, ensuring the seal lip is not damaged by the Woodruff key in the crankshaft, and install the oil pump with the spline teeth of the drive gear engaged with the large teeth of the crankshaft. Install all seven oil pump bolts and tighten them to the specified torque, remembering that the two longer bolts go in the upper right holes. Install a new O-ring on the lower end of the dipstick tube, coat it with a small amount of engine oil, and install the tube into the oil pump housing, tightening the tube bracket-to-water pump mounting bolt securely before inserting the dipstick into the tube. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal.
