Start the procedure by disconnecting the cable from the battery's negative terminal. If you're working on a PreRunner or a 4WD model, the forward under-vehicle splash shield will need to be removed. Proceed by draining the cooling system, and removing the engine cover, the drive belt, and the engine cooling fan. Take out the air filter assembly followed by the removal of the oil cooler hoses, if equipped, from the timing chain cover, and the coolant bypass hoses from the water inlet assembly. Remove the water inlet assembly, idler pulleys, and alternator. You'll then need to unbolt the air conditioning compressor and set it aside, remove the drive belt tensioner, followed by the removal of the water pump mounting bolts. Finally, thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces. For installation, begin by installing a new gasket and water pump, tightening the water pump bolts to the proper torque specifications. Install a new O-ring on the water pump, and reinstall the water inlet assembly, making sure to use new O-rings and tightening the assembly mounting fasteners to the correct torque specifications. The remainder of the installation process is essentially the reverse of the removal process. After everything is in place, refill the cooling system, run the engine, and conduct a check for any leaks.
