To remove the water pump on a vehicle, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and draining the cooling system. Then, raise the vehicle and remove the engine cover, splash shields, and inner fender splash shield. Drain the engine coolant and remove the drive belt, tensioner, and alternator. Next, remove the wiring harness from the clamp on the water pump and harness bracket. Finally, remove the water pump mounting fasteners and detach the water pump, thoroughly cleaning all sealing surfaces and removing all traces of the old gasket. To install the new water pump, use a new gasket and tighten the fasteners to the proper torque specifications. Refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check for leaks and proper operation.

Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces, removing all traces of old gasket.

1. Remove the engine covers, radiator support trim cover, and the inner fender splash shield on the right side. 2. Remove the drive belts. 3. Remove the alternator and tensioner for the alternator belt. 4. Remove the water pump mounting fasteners, then remove the water pump from the housing. 5. Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces, removing all traces of old gasket. 6. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the fasteners to the torque. 7. Refill the cooling system, run the engine, and check for leaks and proper operation.

A failure in the water pump can cause serious engine damage due to overheating.
