Take off the accessory drive belt and the intake manifold brace, making sure to remove the Air Suction (AS) valve first on certain models. Remove the oil pan dipstick and disconnect the water by-pass on carbureted models. Take off the hoses from the inlet pipe and remove the mounting bolt to detach the pipe from the water pump. Remove the alternator and adjusting bar, and check the water pump by-pass pipe for leaks. If necessary, unbolt the clamp and replace the O-ring or hose. Finally, remove the water pump by removing the bolt and two nuts, gently tapping it if it's stuck.

Shaft wear in the water pump can be detected by rocking the water pump pulley up and down, and if there is play in the shaft, the water pump should be replaced.
