Fluid leaks frequently occur due to wear of the driveaxle oil seals or the speed sensor O-rings. Replacement of these seals is relatively easy, since the repairs can usually be performed without removing the transaxle from the vehicle. The driveaxle oil seals are located on either side of the transaxle, where the drive-axle shaft is splined into the differential. If leakage at the seal is suspected, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. If the seal is leaking, fluid will be found on the side of the transaxle. To replace the driveaxle seal, remove the driveaxle and carefully pry out the old seal using a screwdriver or prybar. If necessary, a special oil seal removal tool can be used. Install the new oil seal using a seal driver or a large deep socket as a drift, making sure it is completely seated and lubricating the lip with multi-purpose grease. For speed sensors on 5-speed transaxles, look for lubricant around the sensor housings to determine if an O-ring is leaking. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the sensor from the transaxle. Remove the old O-ring and install a new one on the driven gear housing before reinstalling the speedometer driven gear and vehicle speed sensor housing, tightening the hold-down bolt securely.

Fluid leaks often arise from wear of the driveaxle oil seals and the speedometer drive gear oil seal and O-rings, with replacement being relatively straightforward as repairs can typically be done without removing the transaxle from the vehicle. The driveaxle oil seals are positioned on either side of the transaxle where the driveaxle shaft connects to the differential. To check for leakage, elevate the vehicle securely on jackstands; if a seal is leaking, fluid will be present on the transaxle's side. To replace the driveaxle seal, first remove the driveaxle, and if replacing the right side seal, take out the intermediate shaft and driveaxle assembly as one unit. Carefully pry the oil seal out of the transaxle bore using a screwdriver or prybar, ensuring not to damage the bore surface. If the seal is stubborn, a special oil seal removal tool may be necessary. Install the new oil seal using a seal driver or a large deep socket, ensuring it is seated properly and lubricated with multi-purpose grease. Reinstall the driveaxle assembly, taking care not to damage the new seal's lip. The vehicle speed sensor and one or two transmission speed sensors are found on the transaxle case; check for lubricant around the sensor housings to identify any O-ring leaks. Disconnect the electrical connector from the speed sensor and remove it, followed by the O-ring. A new O-ring should be installed on the driven gear housing before reinstalling the speedometer driven gear and speed sensor housing, ensuring the hold-down bolt is tightened securely. For Avalon models, the direct clutch speed sensor seal is located on the transaxle housing; check for lubricant around the sensor housing to spot any O-ring leaks. Disconnect the electrical connector from the direct clutch speed sensor, remove the sensor, and take out the O-ring. A new O-ring, coated with ATF, should be installed on the sensor body before reinstalling the direct clutch speed sensor and tightening the hold-down bolt securely.

A special oil seal removal tool (available at auto parts stores) will be required.
