    Q:
Can the crankshaft front oil seal be replaced with the timing gear cover in place on Toyota Land Cruiser? Posted by Customer
    A:
The crankshaft front oil seal can be replace while the timing gear cover is still in position but due to limited space it is easier to remove it first. Start with unconnecting the negative terminal of car battery, then, and removing the crankshaft pulley Another thing that may be needed is mastering the activation code from the radio, if this is equipped with antitheft security. The direction of the seal's installation should be observed; the new one has to be installed in the same way. Remove carefully the old oil seal, from the cover using a seal puller or a big screw driver, no twisting or scratching the old seal. Coat the outer perimeter with clean engine oil or mult-purpose grease and insert the new lips-inwards then use a standard socket or steel pipe and pound till flush with the cover. Once you've got the timing gear cover off, you can pry the old seal free and it is very important to be careful so that the cover or the seal bore is not damaged. High mileage can also be a cause, in which applying penetrating oil at the joint of the seal to the cover would be useful. The bore should be free from the previous seal materials and corroded parts, the new seal should be orientated with the lip towards the inside while requiring slight amount of oil for its installation. When the sealing face of the seal has reached the desired position drive it into this position fully with the help of a socket or pipe of the diameter of the seal or apply wooden block. Last of all, amazingly, replace the timing gear cover.
