Oil leaks can be found to originate from the extension housing Automatic Transmission Output Shaft Seal which is rather common to get worn and it is not very difficult a task to get replaced with the transmission still in the vehicle. The extension housing of the Automatic Transmission Output Shaft Seal can be found near the back end of the transmission close to the driveshaft coupling. First, place the car on a lift and make sure it is properly blocked using jackstands. Next, remove the driveshaft. Light weight grease should be applied to the splines of the transmission output shaft and the outer side of the slip yoke for the driveshaft before reinserting the new driveshaft being careful not to exert too much pressure to damage the lip of the new seal. Last, look at the level of the lubricant in the transmission and add if it is low.

Leaking of oil is observed mostly around the extension housing Automatic Transmission Output Shaft Seal and since this can be replaced easily without having to uninstall the transaxle from the car. The extension housing Automatic Transmission Output Shaft Seal is sited at the very end of the transverse part of the body of the transmission where shaft drives are fixed. To start off, lift the car and place it on jackstands properly so that all the wheels are off the ground. If the seal is leaking, Transmission lubricant will leak on the front of the drive shaft and may drop from the rear end of the transmission. Next, remove the driveshaft. Lubricate the new seal lips with petroleum jelly and drive the seal into place with a large socket or seal installer tool. There is also a smaller seal inside the companion flange that may need to be replaced. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal, making sure to tighten the companion flange nut.

This procedure applies to both the front and rear seals of the transfer case.
