    Q:
How to remove and install Air Bag and Air Bag Control Module on Toyota Rav4? Posted by Customer
    A:
Standard safety features for all models consist of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), or Air Bag, that safeguards the driver and front seat passenger during head-on or frontal crash. The components of the system are front airbag sensors, side airbag sensors, and a sensing/diagnostic module near the floor console. Airbag modules are usually made up of a housing that has the bag and the inflator units; these components inflate the bag almost simultaneously when an electrical impulse is relayed to them. This signal is transferred by the spiral cable which is a flat ribbon-like tape regardless the position of the steering wheel. In total, airbag modules are located: in the steering wheel; above the glove box; in front seats; and on the roof rails. Pyrotechnic devices called seat belt retractors work the necessary elements-the lap belts and shoulder belts, drawing the belts in closer to the occupant in the event of an accident. The control unit with microprocessor controls the system and the crash sensors and the 'AIRBAG' light stays on for few seconds after the ignition as a test. For deployment, the impact sensors have to be triggered and that completes the circuit to the airbag inflater. A self-diagnosis circuit switches on a lamp on the selected instrument panel when the ignition is on, depending on the system status. To put off the airbag system, the steering wheel should be in the straight position, the keywithdrawn in the Lock position and the negative battery terminal unbolted and left with enough time for the back up power source to drain. To enable the system, the ignition should be in ON position with no keys inserted into the ignition and then connecting back the negative terminal of the battery, and also, the airbag warning lamp should be checked. In order to carry out component removal one has to wait for at least 90 seconds after the battery has been disconnected. The air bag control module, which can have different designations, shall always be replaced by a new, non-flashed air bag control module. Furthermore, removal of the driver's airbag module and the spiral cable that connects it to the steering colum has another procedure while the removal of the passenger's airbag module entails the arming and the dismantling of the glove box and the instrument panel. That is so, the knee bolster module is one part that can be detached provided that there is adherence to certain procedures. Therefore, it is not recommended to interfere with other airbag system parts.
