    Q:
How to Check and Replace Oxygen and Air/Fuel Sensors on 1997 through 2001 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
    A:
To check the oxygen sensor, locate the electrical connector and insert pins into the signal and ground terminals, then use a voltmeter to monitor the voltage signal as the engine warms up. The sensor should fluctuate between 0.1 to 0.9 volts in closed-loop mode. Inspect the heater resistance and verify it is receiving battery voltage. If the sensor fails any tests, replace it. To replace the sensor, disconnect the battery, unplug the electrical connector, unscrew the sensor from the exhaust manifold, apply an anti-seize compound to the threads, and install the new sensor. The air/fuel sensor cannot be checked for voltage without a special tool, but the resistance of the heating element can be checked with an ohmmeter. To replace the AF sensor, disconnect the battery, unplug the electrical connector, unscrew the sensor from the exhaust manifold, apply anti-seize compound to the threads, and install the new sensor.

    Q:
What is the purpose of the heating elements in oxygen and air/fuel sensors for the 2000 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
    A:
The heating elements in oxygen and air/fuel sensors ensure they reach their normal operating temperature as quickly as possible.

    Q:
What should be applied to the threads of the sensor before installation for the 2003 Toyota Sienna? Posted by Customer
    A:
Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the sensor to facilitate future removal. New sensors should already be coated, but if reusing an old sensor, re-coat the threads.

    Q:
What type of engine management systems do the 2002 Toyota Solara covered by this manual have? Posted by Customer
    A:
All vehicles covered by this manual have On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) engine management systems, which can verify the accuracy of the feedback loop between the oxygen sensor and the PCM.

    Q:
What precautions should be taken when servicing sensors for the 2005 Toyota Sienna? Posted by Customer
    A:
Special care must be taken to avoid damaging the permanently attached pigtail and electrical connector, keep contaminants away from the sensor, avoid using cleaning solvents, and ensure the silicone boot is correctly positioned.

    Q:
What is the difference between the oxygen sensor and air/fuel sensor in a 2000 Toyota Solara? Posted by Customer
    A:
Oxygen sensors and air/fuel sensors have different operating characteristics. Oxygen sensors are galvanic batteries that react to the oxygen content in the exhaust stream to produce a voltage output that the PCM monitors to determine the ratio of oxygen to fuel in the mixture and make the necessary correction. Air/fuel (A/F) sensors provide a variable voltage output to the PCM that's proportional to the air/fuel mixture ratio in the exhaust stream.

    Q:
How do you check the air/fuel sensor on a 2000 Toyota Solara? Posted by Customer
    A:
The air/fuel sensor cannot be checked for voltage without a special tool, but the resistance of the heating element can be checked with an ohmmeter.
