Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands placed under the frame, not under the axle. Block the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling off the stands and remove the rear wheels. Position a jack under the rear axle differential housing. Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential and fasten it out of the way with a piece of wire from the underbody. Disconnect the load sensing proportioning and bypass valve height sensing spring from the axle. Detach all brake hoses and lines from the axle housing, plugging them to prevent fluid leakage. Remove the rear brake drums and brake assemblies. Disconnect the parking brake cables from the brake assemblies and detach the cables from the rear axle housing. Detach the vent hose from the axle housing and fasten it out of the way. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the spring seats or from the axle brackets, then compress them to get them out of the way. On T100 and Tacoma models, disconnect the leaf spring U-bolts and remove the spacers, bumpers, and spring seats. On 4Runner models, disconnect the stabilizer bar, lateral control rod, and upper and lower suspension arms. Lower the jack under the differential, then remove the rear axle assembly from under the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring all suspension fasteners are tightened. On T100 and Tacoma models, lower the vehicle weight onto the wheels before completely tightening the U-bolt nuts. Finally, bleed the brakes.

Further disassembly requires special tools and a hydraulic press. If the axleshaft, bearing, or oil seal needs to be replaced, take the axleshaft assembly to an automotive machine shop.
