    Q:
How to remove and install a drum brake shoe on Toyota Corolla? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the brake drum, first, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jack stands. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel. If the brake drum cannot be easily removed, retract the Brake Shoe Set by pushing the lever off the adjuster star wheel with a narrow screwdriver while turning the adjuster wheel with another screwdriver. Check the drum for cracks, score marks, deep scratches, and hard spots before reinstalling. To install the brake drum, simply place it on the axle flange and install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the proper torque specifications. Adjust the brakes by making a number of forward and reverse stops and operating the parking brake until satisfactory pedal action is obtained. Finally, check the operation of the brakes carefully before driving the vehicle.

    Q:
How do you replace the rear brake shoes on Toyota Prius? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands while blocking the front wheels to prevent rolling. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel, ensuring that all four rear brake shoes are replaced simultaneously, but work on one side at a time to avoid mixing parts. Mark the relationship of the drum to the axle with paint; if the drum is stuck, it can be pushed off with two bolts threaded through its holes. Clean the brakes with brake cleaner and allow them to dry, positioning a drain pan underneath to catch fluid and residue, avoiding the use of compressed air to blow off brake dust. Depress the hold-down spring, turn the retainer 90 degrees, and release it; using pliers or a special removal tool can ease this process. Unhook the anchor spring from the end of the shoe, remove the hold-down spring from the leading shoe, and slide the adjuster off after unhooking the spring. Release the adjuster lever spring, detach the parking brake cable from the lever, and apply a small amount of brake grease where the shoes contact the backing plate and to both ends of the star wheel adjuster. Assemble the adjuster and lever to the new leading shoe, install the return spring, attach the parking brake lever to the trailing shoe, and crimp the new retainer to the pivot pin before connecting the parking brake cable. Secure the trailing shoe to the backing plate with the hold-down spring and retainer, install the lower return spring, position the leading shoe, connect the lower return spring, and install the adjuster mechanism, ensuring proper engagement with the trailing shoe and parking brake lever. Attach the upper return spring to the trailing shoe, install the front shoe hold-down spring and retainer, and prepare the brake assembly for adjustment. If the brake drum cannot be easily removed, ensure the parking brake is fully released; if it still cannot be pulled off, retract the brake shoes by removing the plug from the backing plate and using a screwdriver to push the lever off the adjuster star wheel while turning the adjuster wheel. Before reinstalling the drum, check for cracks, score marks, deep scratches, and hard spots, and if any issues are found, take the drum to an automotive machine shop for resurfacing, ensuring not to exceed the maximum drum diameter. Install the brake drum on the axle flange, pump the brake several times, and adjust the star wheel until the shoes slightly drag on the drums, then back off until they don't drag. Install the plug in the brake backing plate, put the wheel and lug nuts back on, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Make several forward and reverse stops and operate the parking brake to adjust the brakes for satisfactory pedal action, and check the operation of the brakes carefully before driving.
