To remove the starter motor assembly from the engine compartment, begin by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, remove the engine cover(s), air filter housing, and air inlet duct. Next, detach the electrical connectors from the starter/solenoid assembly. Unscrew the starter motor assembly and remove it. To reinstall, switch the removal steps going from the last step to the first step.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

Check for battery voltage to the solenoid to determine if the solenoid is receiving the correct voltage signal from the ignition switch.

Check the starter cranking voltage and the current draw from the battery while the starter assembly is on the engine. Crank the engine for 10 seconds or less and observe the battery voltage; it should not drop below 8.0 volts for manual transaxle models or 8.5 volts for automatic transaxle models. Also, observe the current draw using an ammeter; it should not exceed 400 amps or drop below 250 amps. If the values are not within the correct range, replace the starter. Ensure the battery is in good condition, the battery cold-cranking rating is adequate, and the battery terminals and cables are clean and not corroded. In extreme cold temperatures, warm the battery or engine block before testing.

Detach the electrical connectors from the starter/solenoid assembly.

Check the starter cranking voltage and the current draw from the battery. This test must be performed with the starter assembly on the engine.
