Separate the motor from the gear reduction and solenoid assembly, then remove the solenoid from the gear reduction assembly, noting the return spring protruding from the solenoid assembly, ensuring it is installed before reassembling. Installation is the reverse of removal, making sure to align the paint or scribe mark.

Separate the motor from the gear reduction and solenoid assembly then remove the solenoid from the gear reduction assembly. Note the return spring protruding from the solenoid assembly - make sure that this spring is installed before reassembling the solenoid and the gear reduction assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to align the paint or scribe mark. For the direct type, remove the nut and disconnect the lead wire from the solenoid electrical terminal. Remove the two bolts from the solenoid and carefully unhook the solenoid and remove it from the starter assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.
