The transmission range sensor incorporates the Park/Neutral function along with the back-up light switch, providing transmission gear position information to the PCM. The Park/Neutral function prevents the engine from starting in any gear other than Park or Neutral; if the engine starts in any other position, the switch needs adjustment. The transmission position switch serves as an information sensor for the Electronic Controlled Transaxle Powertrain Control Module. When the shift lever is in position, the Park/Neutral position switch sends a voltage signal to the PCM. To replace the switch, first remove the battery and battery tray, then take off the manual lever retaining nut and its lock plate, bending the tabs flat on the lock plate if equipped. Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch, remove the retaining bolts, and take out the switch. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring the switch is adjusted properly. For adjustment, loosen the switch retaining bolts and rotate the switch until the flat on the shaft aligns with the neutral basic line on the switch. Detach the manual lever, then loosen the switch retaining bolts so that the flat on the shaft and the pointer align with the Neutral line on the switch during installation, holding the switch in this position while tightening the bolts. The pointer on the sheet metal lock plate will indicate the alignment of the flat on the shaft with the Neutral line on the switch body. The cable adjustment procedure is also necessary.

After raising the vehicle, disconnect the electrical connector.

Once everything is properly aligned and secured, complete the installation by following the removal steps in reverse order.

Verify that the ignition key can be removed only in the PARK position.
