Q:
What is the location and function of the brake light switch, and how can it be accessed and replaced if necessary on 2005 through 2009 Toyota Tacoma? Posted by Customer
A:
To check the brake light switch, start by removing the trim panel beneath the steering column to access the switch and connector. The switch, located on the brake pedal bracket, opens the brake light circuit when the pedal is fully released and closes the circuit when the pedal is depressed, sending current to the brake lights. If the brake lights are not working, first check the fuse and bulbs. If they are functioning properly, check for voltage at the switch. If there is no voltage, look for an open circuit between the fuse block and the switch. If there is voltage, depress the brake pedal and verify the voltage on the other side of the switch. If there is no voltage on the other side, replace the switch. If voltage is present but the brake lights still don't work, search for an open circuit between the switch and the brake lights. For removal, disconnect the electrical connector from the brake light switch. Rotate the switch counterclockwise 90 degrees to unlock it from its holder, and then pull it out of the holder. To install the switch, insert it into its holder and push it in until the switch body contacts the rubber stop on the brake pedal bracket. Hold the brake pedal up while placing the switch in position. Rotate the switch 90 degrees clockwise to lock it into place, ensuring it achieves the proper clearance (0.020 to 0.098 inch) to the rubber stop automatically. Plug the electrical connector into the switch. Confirm that the brake lights are functioning properly before returning the vehicle to normal service.
