    Q:
How to remove and install the radiator and coolant reservoir on Toyota Highlander? Posted by Customer
    A:
The coolant that is non-toxic can be bought at the local auto parts shop while used coolant requires proper disposal even it is non-toxic when new. The first thing to do when the procedure of removing the radiator is to disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and also you should drain the cooling system. Then unbolt the air intake duct(s) above the radiator and the engine splash shields from below and any engine covers if they exist. On each model of RX 300/330/350 for the 2003 and older models, the part that needs to be removed is the air conditioning condenser, for the 2004 and new models, first remove the hood latch cover, the hood latch, and finally the radiator support cover. Pull the horn electrical connectors, then remove the mounting bolts holding the radiator support cover and the mounting brackets, plus the upper and lower radiator hoses, and the coolant reservoir hose. For 2008 and later models drain the battery if possible, unbolt the transaxle cooler lines, and put drain pan under it. Also, take off the front bumper, plus the transmission cooler lines for the U880F transaxle vehicles, and any sensors, if any. For Highlander models, on 2008 and later models, pull off the front grille followed by the hood latch cover with its switches, after that, the upper and lower radiator hoses, and top hose of the coolant reservoir. It is necessary to disconnect the engine oil cooler lines and transaxle lines being careful of spilling of fluids. For all models, remove electrical connectors for the engine cooling fans and if any wire/s or brackets are connected to the fan shroud and radiator, they should be removed. Unbolt the clips which hold the radiator and then the fan shroud and the cooling fans in place then pull them out as a unit. Check for rust or hole and internal obstruction of the radiator and use compressed air coupled with a soft brush to clean the radiator while avoiding to bend the cooling fins without protective eyeware. Installation is the opposite of removal and check that the rubber mounts are in the right position. The cooling system should then be refilled with the correct ratio of antifreeze and water, the engine should be started to check for leaks and once it has reached normal running temperature the level of the coolant checked again. In most vehicles, the coolant reservoir is installed in a bracket in the fender well where it can be easily accessed; earlier models can be unclipped and removed while those of the 2004 and later Lexus and 2007 and later High lander are fixed to the engine cooling fan shroud and are not removable. The coolant should be poured into another receptacle, the reservoir should be cleaned and checked for cracks or rubbing and replaced if either is present before being reinstalled.
