    Q:
How to remove and install heater core on 2002 through 2006 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
    A:
First, ensure the vehicle's air conditioning system is discharged and refrigerant is properly recovered. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Removal of the heater core involves several steps, beginning with pulling back the carpeting around the heater core/evaporator housing, removing bolts and fasteners supporting the housing on both sides, and releasing retaining clips to separate the central defroster duct from the heater core housing. The cross-cowl support tube should be unbolted but not removed, and the right-side mounting bolts for the heater and blower boxes should be removed. The left-end cross-cowl tube bolts near the door pillar should be loosened, not removed entirely. From the engine side of the firewall, disconnect refrigerant lines to the evaporator and twist off coolant hoses from the heater core tubes, or cut them off if stuck. Inside the vehicle, carefully pull the heater core housing/blower case assembled toward the rear until the heater core tubes clear the firewall. Remove retaining clips securing the heater core to the housing and slide the heater core and tubes out to the left. Installation involves reversing the removal steps, using new O-rings for evaporator refrigerant connections, and ensuring all mounting fasteners for the cross-cowl support tube and heater/blower housings are tightened before reinstalling the instrument panel pad.

    Q:
What are the steps involved in removing the heater core from the instrument panel on Toyota Camry? Posted by Customer
    A:
The manufacturer recommends removing the entire instrument panel to access the heater core, which requires disconnecting numerous electrical connectors and poses a risk of breaking delicate plastic tabs on various components, making it a challenging task for the average home mechanic. Begin by having the air conditioning system discharged by a licensed technician. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Wait until the engine is completely cool, then drain the cooling system and remove the cowl assembly. In the engine compartment, disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall by removing the spring clamps and hoses, pushing the rubber seal inward to release it from the sheet metal, and plugging the heater core pipes to prevent leakage. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the evaporator lines at the firewall. Remove the instrument panel, followed by the Powertrain Control Module and its mounting bracket, as well as the air conditioning amplifier module. In the interior, remove the left and right side defroster nozzle ducts and the heater-to-register ducts, then take out the left and right side floor ducts. Pull back the carpet to remove the carpet mounting bracket and the reinforcement brace mounting brackets at the center console, then remove the center console duct box and the left and right side air ducts. Detach the steering column from the reinforcement brace, remove the fuse and relay box from the left side of the interior, and release the wiring harness clamps and mounting bolts to carefully separate the harness from the reinforcement brace. Remove the reinforcement brace mounting nuts and bolts, then lift the reinforcement brace and the air conditioning/heater assembly from the passenger compartment, taking care to avoid breaking any plastic components. Remove the mounting bolt from the heater core inlet and outlet pipe bracket, release the clip near the firewall, and remove the screw on the retaining strap at the housing before sliding the heater core from the air conditioning/heater housing. Installation follows the reverse order of removal. Refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery, and run the engine to check for leaks and proper system operation, then have the air conditioning system recharged by the shop that discharged it.

    Q:
How to replace the front heater core on Toyota Highlander? Posted by Customer
    A:
But the front heater core uses non toxic coolant while available at auto part stores around the region and although it is non toxic when is fresh one has to dispose the used coolant properly. The process of removing the heater core is problematic for home mechanics as it contains a lot of bolts and some of them are rather hidden so considerable amount of mechanical experience is advised. Initial the air conditioning system should be discharged and the refrigerant reclaimed at a dealer service department or automotive air conditioning business. Termination of the negative battery terminal and pulling out the coolant on the radiators. For removal process involves the withdrawal of the heater/evaporator housing which involves full withdrawal of the instrument panel and support tube. It not necessary to demote the floor console and instrument panel but for certain models, it may be necessary to demote the windshield wiper motor and cowl tray. Take off the refrigerant lines and coolant hoses from the heater core tubes, if they are too long, they must be cut. Take out the steering column and the shift lever, retract the carpet to take off the floor air ducts and take off the shift cable. On specific models remove PCM and body control , fuse and relay box should be removed. Take out the cross-cowl tube and all the little air ducts; deroute the wiring harnesses, and take out the heater/evaporator housing. Remove the heater core from the housing, by basically pulling it backward and install is done in reverse order while making sure new O-rings are used for the evaporator refrigerant connections. For the rear heater core, only for 2004 Highlanders, remove the right rear floor panel, weather stripping, and trim, and the heater hoses and air ducting. For 2007 and earlier models, disconnect the electrical connectors, remove the heater assembly plate and the heater core. On 2008 and subsequent models get the air conditioning out of the system before disconnecting the heater core tube of the retaining and supporting brackets. For PTC heaters, the quick heater is removed from the passenger's side on highlander models and the driver's side on Lexus models, some trims and duct fasteners needed to be removed before disconnecting electrical connections and sliding the heater assembly out. Installation of all the components is carried out in the opposite manner of disassembly, after which the level of the coolant is checked and connections to the hoses for leakage.
