While disconnecting a few things, one needs to remove the cables from the negative terminal of the battery first and connect them to the positive terminal last, in order to prevent short-circuiting of the battery with an object used to loosen these clamps, and while replacing these cables, including the one for the positive terminal, one has to remove the negative cable first. Following the removal of each connection from the battery, identify each cable's respective other end and remove it while observing the cable path for appropriate reinstallation. Usually, the battery terminals are worked on in a way that is different from the cables involved in the call. If replacing, any old cables, bring them when buying new ones as it is advisable to use alike parts. Scrape or wire brush the threads of the solenoid, or ground connections to remove rust and corrosion to avoid future building up of the crust, apply a thin layer of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly. Connecting the cable to the solenoid or the ground connection and screw on the nut or bolt in a tight manner. Before connecting a new cable to the battery the cable has to be placed touching the surface of the battery without stretching and connect directly to the positive terminal of the battery, then the ground cable to connect to the negative terminal of the battery.
