Toyota Matrix Steering Wheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the airbag module and steering wheel on Toyota Matrix?
A: To disinstall the airbag module, turn the ignition key off , with the wheels facing forward and unplug from the battery negative terminal for more than two minutes. Remove the Torx screws that are attached to the air bag module on the steering wheel until it is loose but not enough to detach it from the case. Take out the airbag module from the steering wheel, remove the electric connectors where the locks can be unlocked by the use of a small screwdriver and place the module where it will not cause any risk. If so fitted, remove the cruise control electrical connector and lower steering column shroud if the removal of the floor console is going to be done. Loosen the steering wheel, mark the position of the steering shaft to the hub so that it could be easily fixed to maintain proper alignment, you now remove the nut that holds the steering wheel. There then can be used a puller to separate the steering wheel with the help of it from the shaft if it is needed. In case the airbag spiral cable should be disconnected, then disconnect the electrical connector and separate it from the combination switch. To install, make sure that the front wheels are aligned as indicated by the dotted lines, press the lock tab of the spiral cable present at the back of the power switch located at the lower right hand part of the product unit, rotate the cable and release the lock tab at the same time in counter clockwise direction until the pointers of the power switch are aligned, rotate it further in clockwise direction for additional 2 ½ turns. Adjust the position of the mark on the steering wheel hub to that on the shaf, then put the wheel on the shaft and lastly, tighten the nut. Insert the cruise control connector and the electrical connectors to airbag module and lock down the tab by pressing it. Finally, ensure that the clips of the electrical connectors of the airbag module are properly engaged before putting the module back in place, twisting the retainers until they are tight and re-connecting the negative terminal of the battery.
