Toyota Prius Valve Stem Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Can broken valve springs and defective valve stem seals be replaced without removing the cylinder head on Toyota Prius?
A: Coiled valve spared and bad valve stem seal can be replace without removing the Cylinder Head, 2 special tools and compressed air are needed. Start by unwiting the work valve cover and the Timing Chain, camshafts, as well as the lifters. Pull out the spark plug from the particular cylinder whereas, for the complete change of valve stem seals, pull out all the spark plugs. When doing a blanking check, rotate the crankshaft until the piston in the subject cylinder is on TDC on the compression stroke, and if replacing all the seals, begin with cylinder number one proceeding to fire sequence. Insert an adapter into the spark plug hole and couple an air line connected to compressed air, would be wise to have the cylinder at TDC to avoid piston movement. Push the shop rags into the cylinder head holes where the valves are to ensure that one does not lose the parts. To remove the keepers, first tap on the top of each valve spring retainer lightly to free it from the keepers then push in on the valve spring compressor to remove the keepers. Lift off the valve spring and the retainer without scratching the face or the seat of the valve. Take out the former valve stem seals-the intake and exhaust ones are different-and, using a rubber band or even a piece of plastic tape, secure the stem so that it cannot fall into the combustion chamber while removing the air pressure. Check the condition of the valve stem to be smooth, but firmly in its guide. Return air pressure to shut the valve, coating the valve stem with engine oil and put in a new seal on the valve guide. Line up the valve spring and retainer and compress the spring with the help of the valve spring compressor tool and then place the keepers in the groove and apply grease on the keepers so that it stays in position. Take off the load from the spring tool to allow the keepers to sink into their respective places, detach the air hose, and pull off the adapter from the spark plug hole. Last of all, fit the camshaft, the lifters, the timing chain, the valve cover, spark plugs, ignition coils, and start the engine and follow its performance for oil leaks and abnormal noise.
