What is the function and importance of the axle shafts and CV joints in Toyota Sienna?

Power is transferred from the transaxle to the wheels through a pair of Axle Shaft in the vehicle. These drive axles have inner and outer ends. The inner end of every drive axle is connected to the transaxle and directly splined to the different side gears. The outer ends of the drive axles are splined to axle hubs and secured by a large nut. The left-side drive axle is shorter than the right-side drive axle. The right axle also includes an intermediate shaft supported by a bearing in the middle. The inner ends of the drive axles feature sliding constant velocity (CV) joints, which allow for both angular and axial motion. The outer joint, comprising ball bearings between an inner race and an outer race, enables angular movement but not axial motion. Regular inspection of the boots surrounding the CV joints is crucial to identify any damage or leakage of lubricant. If a CV joint boot is torn, it must be replaced immediately to prevent damage to the joints.

How do you remove and install a drive axle on a Toyota Sienna?

To remove an axle shaft, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and setting the parking brake. Remove the wheel cover or hubcap, cotter pin, and bearing nut lock from the axle shaft hub nut. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and remove the wheel. Remove any engine splash shields in the way and the axle shaft/hub nut. Pry the control arm down to separate the components and tap the end of the axle shaft with a soft-faced hammer or a hammer and a brass punch to loosen it from the hub splines. Place a drain pan underneath the transaxle and remove the case protector if necessary. Pull out on the steering knuckle and detach the axle shaft from the hub. To install the axle shaft, follow the reverse of the removal procedure and push the axle shaft sharply inward to seat the retaining ring on the inner CV joint in the groove in the differential side gear. Check the intermediate shaft bearing for smooth operation and replace it if necessary.
