Toyota Solara Shift Interlock Solenoid Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Does the Shift Lock System and Shift Interlock Solenoid Work and How Do You Test and Replace on Toyota Solara?
A: The shift lock system prevents the shift lever from being shifted out of Park until the brake pedal is applied, consisting of a stop light switch, a key interlock solenoid, a shift lock override button, a shift lock solenoid, a shift lock control switch, and a shift lock control computer (ECU). Two systems of different designs are used on these vehicles, one made by TMC and one by TMMK, with no distinguishing features other than inspecting the shift lever assembly with the console cover removed. For TMC type systems, the shift lock solenoid and control switch are contained within the control unit assembly, which must be replaced as a single component. To check the shift lock control computer, remove the console to access it behind or beside the shift lever, then use a digital voltmeter to bridge the indicated terminals of each computer connector while measuring the voltage with the ignition switch, brake pedal, or shift lever in the specified positions, ensuring to backprobe the connectors to avoid damage. If the computer does not operate correctly, it should be replaced. For the TMMK type shift lock solenoid, disconnect the electrical connector and measure the resistance between the terminals with an ohmmeter, then apply battery voltage to verify that the solenoid clicks; if it does not perform as expected, it should be replaced. For both TMC and TMMK types of the key interlock solenoid, disconnect the electrical connector, measure the resistance, and apply battery voltage to check for a clicking sound, replacing it if it fails to operate correctly. For the TMMK shift lock control switch, disconnect the electrical connector and verify continuity between the indicated terminals when the shift lever is in the specified positions, replacing it if it does not function as intended. To replace any of these components, remove the center console, locate the shift lock control computer at the rear of the shift lever base, the control switch in front of it, and the solenoid at the front of the base, disconnecting the electrical connectors and unclipping or unscrewing the devices from their mounting brackets. The key interlock solenoid is situated near the ignition switch.
