Toyota Tacoma Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you remove and replace the crankshaft front oil seal in four cylinder engine on 2005 through 2009 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Adjacent to it is the drivebelt which should be removed together with the fan shroud for enough clearance. You have to slacken the crankshaft pulley bolt while keeping the pulley on the crankshaft in its circular position using a strap wrench, chain wrench or a special one; you might need a special puller to get rid of the pulley. Make sure the puller has screws that fit into the holes of the pulley and not the claws that clamp around the edges of the pully. Measure the depth of the seal in the bore after you take out the pulley, then remove it gently with the help of a screwdriver or a seal removing tool, being keen not to scratch the crank shaft or the timing chain cover. Scrub the bore in the cover and put engine oil or multi-purpose grease on the outer circumference of the new seal. To remove the seal, use a seal driver or a socket with an outside diameter slightly less than the OD of the seal, and tap the new seal into the seat until it bottoms, giving it a square installation to the same depth as before with a check to see that the spring is in place. Put back the crankshaft pulley and the drivebelt, start up the engine to inspect whether there is oil leakage at the front seal.
