Remove the crankshaft pulley. Note how the Crankshaft Seal is installed - the new one must be installed to the same depth and facing the same way. Carefully pry the oil seal out of the cover with a seal puller or a large screwdriver. Be very careful not to distort the cover or scratch the crankshaft! Wrap electrician's tape around the tip of the screwdriver to avoid damage to the crankshaft. Apply clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the outer edge of the new seal, then install it in the cover with the lip (spring side) facing in. Drive the seal into place with a seal driver or a large socket and a hammer. Make sure the seal enters the bore squarely and stop when the front face is at the proper depth. Check the surface on the pulley hub that the seal rides on. If the surface has been grooved from long-time contact with the seal, a press-on sleeve may be available to renew the sealing surface. This sleeve is pressed into place with a hammer and a block of wood and is commonly available at auto parts stores for various applications. Lubricate the pulley hub with clean engine oil and reinstall the crankshaft pulley. Install the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt and tighten it. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal.

First of all, remove the engine/transmission assembly and transaxle. Remove the drive plate. The Crankshaft Seal can be replaced without removing the oil pan or seal retainer. Use a seal-removal tool or a knife to cut the lip off the old Crankshaft Seal, avoiding scratching the crankshaft. Lubricate the new Crankshaft Seal and crankshaft seal journal with grease. Drive the new Crankshaft Seal into the container with a wood block or pipe. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Wrap tape around the tip of the screwdriver to avoid scratching the housing bore or damaging the crankshaft, as this could cause the new seal to leak.

Install the flywheel or driveplate.

The new seal should be evenly driven into the container using a wood block or a section of pipe slightly smaller in diameter than the outside diameter of the seal.

So that the new seal can be installed to the same depth.

Note how far the seal is recessed in the bore, then cut away the seal lip with a razor knife. After that, cut away the crankshaft seal lip and carefully pry the seal out of the engine with a screwdriver or seal removal tool. If using a screwdriver, wrap tape around the tip to avoid scratching the housing bore or damaging the crankshaft.

Carefully pry the seal out of the timing chain cover with a screwdriver or seal removal tool. Cut away the crankshaft seal lip, wrap a screwdriver tip with tape, and pry out the seal. If using a screwdriver, ensure to wrap tape around the tip to avoid scratching the housing bore or damaging the crankshaft, as damage to the crankshaft can lead to leaks with the new seal.

The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal process.

Run the engine and check for oil leaks at the front seal.

Lubricate the outside diameter of the seal and install the seal over the end of the crankshaft, making sure the lip of the seal points toward the engine.

Drive the new seal into the retainer with a wood block or a section of pipe slightly smaller in diameter than the outside diameter of the seal. Make sure that you don't cock the seal in the retainer bore.

Remove the transaxle assembly, then separate the transaxle from the engine.

The first step is to remove the timing belt and crankshaft timing belt sprocket.

Using a seal driver or a socket with an outside diameter slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the seal, carefully drive the new seal into place with a hammer. Ensure that the seal lip is lubricated and that the seal is installed squarely and driven in flush with the surface of the timing chain cover. After installation, check the seal to make sure the spring didn't pop out of place.

Remove the crankshaft pulley.

The new seal can be driven into place using a seal driver or a large socket and a hammer. It is important to ensure that the seal enters the bore squarely and stops when the front face is at the proper depth.

Reinstall the rear timing belt cover and tighten the bolts. Then, reinstall the camshaft sprocket(s) and timing belt. Finally, run the engine and check for oil leaks at the camshaft seal.

This procedure assumes that the engine has been removed from the vehicle.

The old seal can be removed from the retainer by driving it out from the back side with a hammer and punch after removing the retainer from the block. It should be supported on a couple of wood blocks while driving out the old seal. Be sure to note how far it is recessed into the bore before removing it, as the new seal will need to be recessed an equal amount. Care should be taken not to scratch or damage the bore in the retainer to prevent oil leaks.

The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.

Remove the timing belt and crankshaft timing belt sprocket.

Position the seal and retainer assembly between two wood blocks on a workbench and drive the old seal out from the back side with a screwdriver.

Lubricate the crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal with multi-purpose grease. Position a new gasket on the engine block. Apply a bead of RTV sealant to the exposed portion of the oil pan flange and particularly at the pan-to-block mating surface.

Ensure that the seal lip is lubricated and that the seal is installed squarely and driven in flush with the surface of the timing chain cover.
