    Q:
How Do You Remove and Refit the Transmission and Flywheel/Driveplate in a Manual Transmission on Toyota Echo? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the transmission, start by removing the clutch on manual transmission models. Before removal, paint an alignment mark between the engine and flywheel/driveplate to make it easier to line up during refitting. Jam a suitable tool into the ring gear to prevent the crankshaft from rotating as the bolts are removed. Unscrew the six retaining bolts and carefully remove the flywheel/driveplate from the rear flange of the crankshaft. Recover the adapter plate from the end face of the engine if necessary. When inspecting, renew the flywheel/driveplate bolts if they are in poor condition. Check the starter ring gear for any broken or excessively-worn teeth and renew if necessary. Inspect the clutch friction surface for grooving or hairline cracks and have it surface-ground if possible, otherwise renew the flywheel. When refitting, ensure the mating faces of the flywheel/driveplate and crankshaft are clean. Apply thread-locking fluid to the bolt threads before screwing them into position. Align the flywheel with the previously-made mark and hand-tighten the bolts initially. Prevent the crankshaft from turning and tighten the bolts in a diagonal sequence to the specified torque. Refit the clutch if applicable, and then refit the transmission.
